¿Cuánto dura la tinta UV? Una guía detallada.

¿Cuánto dura la tinta UV?

UV printing is not something new. This printing technique has been in use for years. People use UV printing to put different designs and patterns on different products. What makes this method stand out is the immediate curing of the ink (prints). However, many people still wonder how durable UV prints are. So, they ask: How long does UV ink last?

When we say UV ink, we actually mean prints made with UV ink. UV ink is a specialized ink that hardens when exposed to UV light. In UV printing, a dedicated lamp is used to expose the ink to UV light for curing. In this article, I will discuss everything about the durability and lifespan of UV ink (prints). This will help you decide whether UV printing is worth your attention. So, let’s get started!

¿Qué es la tinta UV?

Before discussing the lifespan of UV ink, let’s first understand what UV ink actually is. This will help you differentiate UV ink from the traditional ink used in most printing techniques.

UV ink, also known as ultraviolet ink, is a special type of ink. It dries and hardens when exposed to UV light. This process of hardening happens within seconds once the ink is exposed to UV light. This immediate curing process ensures the design printed on the products dries and becomes durable. Traditional inks may take longer and require different hardening methods.

UV ink has three main ingredients that make it unique. These include pigments, resins, and photoinitiators. Pigments typically provide the ink’s color. Different pigments can create different ink colors to meet printing needs. Resins help form hard layers of the design during curing. Among these ingredients, photoinitiators are the most important element.

That’s because photoinitiators react with UV light when exposed. This reaction is called UV curing and helps the ink dry and harden quickly. You’ll notice UV ink dries almost immediately when exposed to UV light. That’s because of these photoinitiators present in the UV ink. Impresoras UV first apply the UV ink to the surface of the products where prints need to be made.

This product is also called a substrate. The printer has UV lamps that emit UV light onto the ink on the product surface. When exposed to UV light, this ink dries and hardens immediately. After that, you can even touch the prints, and it will be fine. The ink won’t smudge when touched. The ink doesn’t require any additional treatment to harden.

What Makes UV Ink Unique?

Honestly, UV ink is unique and better than other inks for several reasons. Some of these reasons are as follows:

  • Fast curing (Drying and Hardening)
  • Compatible with a wide range of materials
  • Durable and available in different colors.

As I said above, UV ink dries when exposed to UV light. The process of UV ink drying and hardening is called UV curing. This happens under UV light. The wet ink dries almost immediately, creating a permanent design (print) on the product’s surface. You can even rub the ink, and it won’t spread across the surface. Unlike other printing methods, you won’t have to rely on evaporation or absorption for ink to dry.

You can use the products immediately after UV printing. Second, UV ink doesn’t require a porous surface. This means you can use this ink to print designs on a wide range of products. These include plastics, glass, metals, acrylic, wood, and more. Other printing inks have limitations in material compatibility.

They typically work best on porous materials. As discussed above, UV ink uses different pigments to create different colors. This means you can print on different materials using different colors. Additionally, UV ink colors are vibrant, which is another major advantage. Above all, UV ink offers very durable prints that last for years.

¿Cuánto dura la tinta UV?

When we say UV ink lasts, we actually mean the longevity or durability of prints made with UV ink.

Prints made with UV inks are very long-lasting and maintain sharpness and vibrancy for years. However, this durability typically depends on the conditions in which products are used. On average, indoor prints can easily last for 4 to 6 years. In contrast, outdoor prints can remain in good condition for 2 to 3 years. UV ink durability depends on how the print is handled.

Remember, indoor UV ink prints are not exposed to harsh conditions. They do not face moisture, sunlight, humidity, high temperatures, and so on. These factors can easily make prints fade. Because indoor prints aren’t exposed to these conditions, they stay durable. You can even expect them to last over 6 years if they aren’t rubbed too often.

Outdoor prints, on the other hand, face harsh conditions. They face high temperatures, moisture, humidity, and so on. These outdoor conditions make UV ink prints fade quickly. So, expect outdoor prints to last 2 to 3 years. Remember, the durability of UV ink (inks) also depends on the materials on which prints are made.

UV ink prints can last longer on acrylic materials. On the other hand, the same quality prints fade quickly on glass materials. Below is the table showing UV ink print longevity with respect to different materials:

Printing Material Estimated UV Print Lifespan
Vidrio 3–5 years
Acrílico 3–6 years
Metal 4–6 years
Plástico 2–4 years
Madera 3–5 years
Cerámico 4–6 years

How Long Does Liquid UV Ink Last in Its Container?

UV ink lasting can also mean the shelf life of the ink inside a container, right?

Most UV inks have a shelf life of 12 months. After this duration, ink quality starts to deteriorate. However, the shelf life of UV inks depends on different factors. These include how the ink is formulated, the conditions in which it is stored, and more. However, some brands also claim a 24-month shelf life for their ink. However, you should not use ink that is too old.

UV ink durability differs when it is used versus when it is stored in a container. As I said above, UV ink hardens when exposed to UV light. This ink remains durable for many years because it hardens. However, the ink inside the container remains liquid. Over time, this ink starts to degrade in quality.

UV ink consists of pigments, resin, and photoinitiators. These ingredients degrade over time and become less stable. Additionally, the ink loses viscosity. All these factors reduce ink quality. You may not get excellent print quality if you use UV ink that is too old (over 12 or 24 months). That’s why I recommend always checking the expiry date of the UV ink. If the ink is too old, it is better not to use it.

UV Ink vs. Other Printing Inks: Which Lasts Longer?

Interestingly, different types of printing inks are available on the market. These include solvent ink, water-based ink, tinta de sublimación, eco-solvent ink, and more. These inks differ in durability and other properties. For example, UV ink is durable and dries very fast. On the other hand, solvent-based and eco-solvent inks offer excellent outdoor durability.

In fact, eco-solvent inks can even offer top-notch durability in bad weather as well. The table below compares the lifespan of these inks.

Printing Ink Estimated Print Lifespan
Tinta UV 3–6 years
Tinta eco-solvente 3–4 years
Solvent Ink 3–5 years
Water-Based Ink 1–3 years
Tinta de sublimación 5–10+ years

Among these, I consider UV ink an excellent option for durability. Apart from durability, this ink cures very fast. When exposed to UV light, the ink dries, hardens, and permanently adheres to the surface. If you want durable, fast-curing ink, choosing UV ink makes sense. Other inks may have material compatibility issues. However, UV ink offers wider material compatibility, so you can print on many materials with ease.

Factors That Affect UV Ink Longevity

As explained above, UV ink is excellent and offers a top-notch printing experience. Prints made with this ink can easily last for years on different materials. However, several factors can affect UV ink longevity and durability. In the section below, I will explain those factors that affect ink durability.

1- Quality of UV Ink

First, UV ink quality matters most. The market offers different types of UV inks, each with varying quality. Some inks contain an excellent balance of pigments, resins, and photoinitiators. These UV inks let you create durable prints with vibrant colors. UV ink prints last a long time.

In contrast, low-quality inks are cheap, but not very durable. Prints made with them fade quickly and have less sharp color. That’s why I never compromise on UV ink quality.

2-  Type of Printing Material

As I said above, UV ink can be used to print on a wide range of materials (substrates). These include glass, metals, acrylics, wood, and more. However, UV ink longevity varies by material. For example, plastics have lower surface energy, so prints on them may not last long. These UV ink prints may peel off quickly. On the other hand, UV ink prints last longer on acrylic materials. Your product materials play a key role in UV ink durability.

3- Sunlight Exposure and UV Radiation

UV lights are important as they dry and harden the UV ink. However, if prints made with UV ink remain exposed to UV rays, this can affect print durability. How? When a print is exposed to UV rays, these rays break down the pigments present in the ink. These pigments color the prints. When pigments become unstable and break down, print colors fade quickly. Therefore, indoor prints that are not exposed to UV rays are more durable than outdoor prints.

4- Indoor vs. Outdoor Environment

The conditions prints are kept in matter. For example, outdoor prints quickly fade. Indoor prints, by contrast, stay in good condition for years. This is because outdoor prints are constantly exposed to sunlight, UV rays, moisture, and more. These conditions cause the prints to fade by breaking down the ink’s pigment. On the other hand, indoor prints are safe from fading. These prints remain durable for years if you don’t scratch or rub them. Unfortunately, one can do little for durability if prints are exposed to harsh conditions.

5- Curing Process & Surface Preparation (Ink Adhesion)

The curing process and surface preparation are two very important parameters. Before printing, the surface must be prepared. It should not contain any dirt or other contaminants. Additionally, during curing, the entire ink layer should be exposed to UV light. If some ink does not face UV light, it might not cure properly. As a result, the ink won’t form a strong bond with the material surface. Its adhesion will be weaker, which can cause it to peel off quickly over time. Therefore, proper adhesion and surface preparation are critical to UV ink durability.

6- Protective Coatings and Lamination

Protective coatings and lamination can increase the lifespan of UV ink. As discussed above, UV ink prints fade when exposed to sunlight, moisture, and other elements. However, protective coatings add another layer of protection. This protective shield acts as a barrier protecting prints from UV rays, moisture, and other elements. These coatings also protect prints from everyday wear, handling, abrasion, and more. As a result, prints made with UV ink remain durable for longer. However, choose the right coating and lamination for the best results.

Conclusión

In conclusion, UV ink is an excellent option used in UV printing. This ink makes strong prints that last for years. With proper care, prints can last up to 6 years. However, UV ink durability can vary depending on several factors. On average, expect UV ink to last 2 to 6 years.

Outdoor prints typically last 2 years, while indoor prints can last over 6 years. This is decent durability compared with other ink types. Remember, several factors influence the durability of UV ink. Understanding them is crucial if you want your UV ink prints to last longer. In this article, I discuss those factors and how they affect UV ink durability.
